Michael Cera

'True That' (album stream)

BY Josiah HughesPublished Aug 12, 2014

Actor Michael Cera's musical roots go much deeper than the fact that he plays a character named George-Michael on Arrested Development. He's played bass both onscreen and as a touring member of Nick Diamonds' Mister Heavenly project, and contributed mandolin and backing vocals to Weezer's Hurley. Now, he's shared a full-length album of solo material.

The 18-track effort is called True That, and comes with very little info. A bio on his Bandcamp simply reads, "Michael Cera was born in Canada in 1988 at the tender age of zero."

The album is a diverse and charming collection of home-recorded studio experiments, with Cera dabbling in instrumental piano and guitar compositions, singing original songs and covering Blaze Foley's "Clay Pigeons."

It's a fascinating, engaging collection that's well worth your time, particularly if you're a fan of lo-fi bedroom pop.
