Blending Krautrock, psych-folk and electronic influences, Montreal's Le Pélican Noir have developed their own unique take on the post-rock genre, and they're ready to deliver a new set of songs with an EP titled Sous tes paupières les plages désertes et luminescentes. Before it gets released on September 15, though, Exclaim! is giving you the chance to stream the record in its entirety.
The new material sets out to capture the raw feel of the band's live performances, and it was recorded in an abandoned textile factory in their hometown of Montreal. The five tracks emerged from long improvisation sessions and were then "chopped and diced into pieces" to make them a bit simpler and more easily digestible. The group opted to focus on honing "timber and textures" rather than arrangements, and the song titles were often inspired by the full, red moon that hung in the sky during much of the sessions.
The EP opens with "A.M. Glacial," which features the sound of live sound-tape burning before morphing into a string of experimental instrumental tracks that conjure elements of indie rock and electronic music, but never settle for long enough to be pigeonholed into any one category. "Bee Side" brings the album to a close, harkening back to the burning intro and then eventually fading into an unsettling, psychedelic and scrambled recording of subway announcements.
