Weirdo Shrine

La Luz's latest, Weirdo Shrine, is a dark spin on classic surf rock, made even more haunting by the beautiful, ghostly vocals of frontwoman Shana Cleveland. It also benefits from the production and engineering of everyone's favourite rock and roller, Ty Segall. With the help of the SF wunderkind, La Luz manage to capture the energy of their amazing live show, and drench it in dark poetry and fuzz. The vocal harmonies on Weirdo Shrine are eerily perfect, fading in and out of the driving instrumentals.

Cleveland's guitar solos are often wild, nearly coming apart but just holding on, at others graceful, but always, her guitar work is fuzzy and adds to the weird, dark vibe of the whole record. The spookiest track on the record is definitely the girl group-esque "I'll Be True," which boasts not only some of the best vocal work on the album, but some serious organ work from Alice Sandahl. The slow, ghostly ballad gives ample room for the best organ solo I've heard in a long time.

On Weirdo Shrine, La Luz have taken the advice "Let's get weird" to heart, creating a spooky dip into the surf.
