On the album cover of the Kendrick Lamar's 2012 masterpiece good kid, m.A.A.d. city, a caption reads, "a short film by Kendrick Lamar." Now, that album has inspired an actual short film.
Though rumours of the project have been brewing for a while, we now know the flick will simply be called m.A.A.d. and it's being directed by Kahlil Joseph, who previously made the Flying Lotus short film Until the Quiet Comes. It will premiere on August 9 at Sundance's NEXT Fest at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.
A poster for the event reveals that the film was commissioned by Lamar himself. The Fader reports that the film is 14 minutes long, features a cast of local L.A. actors, and is described as featuring "a kaleidoscope of storylines and ideas that defy typical categorization to explore new languages and new forms."
Presumably this short film will make its way online eventually, although there's no details regarding its further release.
Lamar has previously used Joseph's videos montages of Los Angeles in his live stage show.
