Update: Joni Mitchell Not in a Coma

BY Josiah HughesPublished Apr 28, 2015

Late last month, Canadian legend Joni Mitchell was hospitalized after being found unconscious. Now, it appears that things have gone from bad to worse with news that the 71-year-old singer-songwriter is unresponsive in a coma.

TMZ reports that Mitchell's close friend Leslie Morris has filed legal documents to obtain conservatorship over the singer, claiming that she has no relatives who can take on that role.

When Mitchell was discovered unconscious at her home on March 31, she was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where she remains. The legal documents filed by Morris say that Mitchell is "so impaired as to be incapable of being assessed."

Update: Joni Mitchell is apparently not in a coma, although she is still in the hospital. Her website has been updated with the following statement:

Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital - but she comprehends, she's alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital. As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts.
