In the final decade of his life, Johnny Cash experienced something of a resurgence thanks to his team-up with Rick Rubin and his American Recordings. Now, all of those albums are set to be collected in a vinyl box set. American Recordings I-VI is due out on February 24.
There have been six albums in the American series — four released during Cash's life, and two more released posthumously. These are spread across seven vinyl records, as 2002's American IV: The Man Comes Around takes up two LPs.
These all come on 180-gram audiophile vinyl, and the set follows some stand-alone from recent years. The records were cut from the original masters under supervision from Rubin.
The American series contains a scattering of Cash originals, but much of it is heavy on cover material. The iconic version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" appears on American IV, and other covers throughout the series include Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," U2's "One," Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and many more.
The series received a number of Grammys and featured guest appearances from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, June Carter, Will Oldham, Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Don Henley. Cash's final-ever original, "Like the 309," is on American V: A Hundred Highways.
Meanwhile, John Carter Cash recently promised that there are more recordings with Rubin still in the vaults, so perhaps the American series isn't done quite yet.
