While the Mercury Prize honours the UK's best album from the past year, the Welsh Music Prize focuses solely on — you guessed it — the best releases from Wales. The winner of the award from 2013-2014 has now been announced: Joanna Gruesome's Weird Sister.
The ceremony took place today (November 28) in Cardiff. The self-described "dissonant wimp music" quintet beat out fellow nominees Manic Street Preachers, Gruff Rhys, Future of the Left, Cate Le Bon, Bach, Euros Childs, Gulp, Samoans, Slowly Rolling Camera, the Gentle Good and the People the Poet.
The nominees were picked by a jury of more than 100 members, resulting in a shortlist of 12 albums. A panel of nine judges then picked the winner. This year's panel included Mumford & Sons member Ben Lovett.
Weird Sister came out last September; the whole thing is streaming at the bottom of this page. Joanna Gruesome made some promises about what they would do if they won the prize:
