Joanna Gruesome Undergo Lineup Changes, Announce North American Tour

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 1, 2015

Coming off the recent release of Joanna Gruesome's sweet and messy sophomore album Peanut Butter, the UK noise-pop unit have now announced a batch of fall dates on our side of the pond. Interestingly, it'll be the first trip without vocalist Alanna Mcardle, as it's been announced she's just left the group for health reasons.

The band and the outgoing singer issued a joint statement today (June 1) over Facebook, which has Mcardle explaining that she's bowing out over mental health reasons and needs to take a break from the band.

She writes:

Lately, my mental health problems have become a lot worse and I've gone through a pretty shitty time. I've realised I need to actually take some time out to focus on some kind of 'recovery', so I won't be singing in Joanna Gruesome anymore. I hate to sound cheesy but the time I had in jgro was life-changing. I made friends with so many amazing people, had the chance to play with some of my favourite bands, went to places I'd never been before (metaphysically and geographically) and pissed off a lot of men in the process.

For their part, the rest of the band praise Mcardle's contributions over the years, reporting "it's been incredible writin [sic] songs and melodies for someone with such a powerful voice to sing, and her amazin [sic] lyrics have always totally improved the aggressive sections of our music."

On a more personal level, they add that "it's been so so cool to be in a band with someone we've became such great friends with, someone who's been totally unafraid to hone in on horrible jerks and someone who's made negotiating the bullshit of music industry types fun and inspiring."

The band's upcoming North American trip adds Kate Stonestreet (Pennycress) on vocals and Roxy Brennan (Two White Cranes, Grubs) on vocals and keyboards. The late fall tour starts off in Chicago, but quickly heads north for shows in Toronto and Montreal. The trip caps at Vancouver's Cobalt venue on November 15.
