Jimi Hendrix's legacy has been revisited repeatedly in recent years, with tribute projects including (but not limited to) posthumous releases, reissues, and an André 3000-starring biopic. Soon, the guitar god will once again be re-examined, this time with a documentary and an archival live album.
The documentary is called Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin'. It will be out on November 5 through Experience Hendrix LLC and Sony's Legacy Recordings, and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray. The film takes its name from a Hendrix song that he recorded and performed on numerous occasions didn't release during his lifetime.
Hear My Train a Comin' was directed by Bob Smeaton, and a press release reports that it "traces the guitarist's remarkable journey from his hardscrabble beginnings in Seattle, through his stint as a U.S. Army paratrooper, unknown sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard, Joey Dee and the Isley Brothers and his discovery and ultimate international stardom."
The PBS American Masters doc includes input from Paul McCartney, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, and Steve Winwood.
Also on November 5, the Jimi Hendrix Experience's live set from 1968's Miami Pop Festival will be released on CD and double audiophile vinyl. The performance includes classic cuts like "Fire," "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze," plus the earliest live recording of "Hear My Train a Comin'."
It was recorded by Henrix's sound engineer Eddie Kramer. The package sports previously unpublished photos from the festival plus an essay by journalist Bob Santelli. See the tracklist below.
