Jeff Bridges Releases Ambient Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 29, 2015

Actor Jeff Bridges is making a big bid for strangest album of 2015, having just delivered a collection of ambient, experimental lullabies under the title Sleeping Tapes.

Presented by website-building service Squarespace, the 15-song set is available now on LP, cassette and digitally. A press release describes the minimalist collection as "a unique album of relaxing sounds, guided meditations, and stories designed to lull you to sleep."

In a statement, Bridges said, "The world is filled with too many restless people in need of rest – that's why I filled my sleeping tapes with intriguing sounds, noises and other things to help you get a good night's rest."

The album finds the actor/musician collaborating with True Detective composer Keefus Ciancia and engineer Doug Sax. As you can hear in the full album stream down below, Sleep Tapes weaves together the sounds of windy nights, airy piano taps, the laughter of children and more, while Bridges spends his time humming, musing over the act of getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom ("A Glass of Water") or discussing the afterlife ("IKEA").

Down below, you'll find a commercial for the project, which finds Bridges creeping through forests to record the rattling sound of a plastic bag tied up in a tree, while also explaining Squarespace's website building services. A commercial will be aired this Sunday (February 2) during the Super Bowl.

Sleep Tapes is available now as a pay-what-you-want download, with proceeds going to No Kid Hungry, a not-for-profit Bridges has been working with since 2010.

Sleep Tapes also arrives on cassette, a standard slab of black wax, a deluxe edition on gold vinyl, and in a signed box set. Each release is marked with artwork from Bridges and Lou Beach. You can find out more over here.
