Jack White Unearths Live Album from Former Band the Bricks

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 3, 2013

Have you ever heard of Jack White & the Bricks? The garage rocker's former band is hardly his most well-known endeavour, but he is lifting the lid on a live album from the Bricks as part of his latest subscribers-only package for Third Man Records.

An image posted by the label on Twitter reveals that members of Third Man's Vault will receive the archival album Live on the Garden Bowl Lanes. The set, which was recorded at a Detroit bowling alley in 1999 (the same year that the White Stripes released their first album), features White alongside future Raconteurs bandmate Brendan Benson, Kevin Peyok (the Waxwings, the See See) and White Stripes archivist Ben Blackwell (the Dirtbombs). It will be pressed on white vinyl.

While the setlist on the album is currently unknown, you can hear a different live performance by the Bricks from the same era below. This includes early versions of some classic White Stripes tunes, such as "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," "You've Got Her in Your Pocket," "Offend in Every Way" and "Same Boy You've Always Known."

UPDATE: the details of the album are now up at Third Man's website.

Also included in the Vault package is an archival 7-inch from White and Benson. This features demo versions of "Steady as She Goes" and "Same Boy You've Always Known," which were recorded before the Raconteurs turned the former track into a minor hit. It's available on yellow wax.

The package is rounded out by a DVD documenting a joint tour between the White Stripes and fellow Michigan rockers Whirlwind Heat. Created by drummer Brad Holland, it includes unseen footage including White performing onstage with Whirlwind Heat. As Whirlwind Heat point out on their website, they toured with the White Stripes several times between 2000 and 2003, so it's not exactly clear when this DVD dates back to.

As always, in order to receive Third Man's subscription package, you'll have to sign up for the label's Vault.
