Ivory Hours

'Morning Light' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 26, 2015

Earlier this year, as Ivory Hours wrapped up the promotional push behind last year's Mary EP, they said that they would be going into the studio in February with the hopes of releasing a full-length by the spring. Now, the London, ON-based alt-pop outfit are staying true to their word by releasing the album Morning Light. It's scheduled to arrive on June 9, but it can be heard in full on Exclaim! ahead of time.

Morning Light was produced by Dan Brodbeck along with Ivory Hours singer-guitarist Luke Roes, with Brodbeck handling mixing. The resulting 10 tunes are bright and bubbly, with crisp, clean guitar licks mingling with nimble basslines and anchored by danceable rhythms.

There's a touch of funk to tunes like "I Won't" and "Animal," while many of the grooves recall the post-millennial dance-rock explosion. For the most part, however, this record is pure pop, with melodic arrangements that are both bubbly and complex.
