Faris Badwan is best known as the frontman for UK goth-punk outfit the Horrors, but he's recently switched gears with a new symphonic pop project called Cat's Eyes. The new duo also features Rachel Zeffira, a Canadian opera singer and multi-instrumentalist.
Most bands either play their first show at a low-key open mic night or a hyped-up club appearance, but Cat's Eyes managed a level of solemnity and grandeur by making their debut at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, where they performed to seven-high ranking cardinals, as well as some close friends. Footage of the band performing a cathedral-ready version of their song "I Knew It Was Over" can be streamed below.
Pitchfork reports that Cat's Eyes have recorded material with New Order and Happy Mondays producer Steve Osborne at Real World Studios, which is owned by Peter Gabriel. Famed Björk and Aphex Twin music video director Chris Cunningham designed images for the packaging on Broken Glass, their debut EP.
Cat's Eyes will release Broken Glass on February 28 via Polydor Records. Their self-titled full-length will arrive on May 3 via Cooperative Music/Downtown, with a UK release on May 5 via Polydor. EP track "Not a Friend" can be downloaded here in exchange for your email address.
