Though Hawksley Workman may currently be splitting a pair of "Headphones" with the rest of Mounties, the Canadian artist has also revealed some solo plans when he takes his The God That Comes play out on the road.
The "one-man cabaret" has previously premiered at the Alberta Theatre Projects and performed overseas, but upcoming Canadian runs of are set to take place in Vancouver, Whitehorse, Edmonton and Toronto. The first West Coast stint takes place from November 13 to 24 at the Cultch in Vancouver, with a Whitehorse run taking place late in the month. He'll pop by Edmonton's the Citadel in January and start a Toronto residency at the Tarragon next June.
The play was co-written with Christian Barry of 2b theatre company, and a press release describes The God That Comes as "a theatrical tribute to the Greco-Roman god of wine and ecstasy." The work features songs written by Worksman, most of which being crafted over the course of a day.
"In theatre, people like to exist in a state of constant process," Workman said in a statement. "I've always thought of songs as little organic gifts, and taken them as they come, whereas in theatre, we were focused on minutiae at all times. It was interesting accommodating my desire to kind of mess around as I saw fit."
Earlier this year, the play won "Outstanding Production of a Musical" and "Outstanding Sound Design or Composition" at the 2013 Betty Mitchell Awards, which celebrates "outstanding achievement in Calgary's professional theatre community."
