In addition to serving up several film scores on vinyl, Austin's Mondo issues mind-bogglingly beautifully, specially curated posters. Crossing markets from one to the other, founder Justin Ishmael has used his Top 10 Posters of 2014 roundup to reveal plans for an upcoming Mondo soundtrack release, which will be for emotive action-survival videogame The Last of Us.
The announcement was made today (December 18), with Ishmael confirming that a vinyl release of Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla's (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) score is due in 2015. Very little exists beyond that, with neither a release date nor vinyl pressing info having been publicized.
This, however, is what Ishmael had to say about Jay Shaw and Olly Moss's collaborative piece, which presents a lovely profile shot of one of the game's monstrous "clickers."
This was one of our first steps into videogames and we wanted a fresh take on the imagery for The Last of Us. This was originally supposed to be cover art for the vinyl album we'll be releasing in 2015 and it's just gorgeous. Seeing it for the first time at [San Diego Comic Con] was a treat and the positive response it received made us confident enough to get more videogame posters lined up for 2015.
The interesting part of this quote is that it suggests that there will be brand new cover art for the upcoming soundtrack. It's unclear if another artist will be attached, or if Shaw and Moss will likewise produce another piece for Mondo or somehow repurpose the poster art.
Digitaland CD editions of Santaolalla's score for the horror game, in which protagonist Joel navigates a post-apocalyptic U.S. with a young girl named Ellie, had been released in 2013 through Sony. This will be the first vinyl version of the music. You can stream the set down below via Spotify.
