Canadian songwriter Gabrielle Papillon is making a break from her quiet, folksy past with the new album The Tempest of Old. The record is due out on March 24, and before then, it's available to stream on Exclaim.ca.
Papillon recorded it will returning producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Rich Aucoin) at Echo Lake studio in Nova Scotia, and they took her folksy style in a widescreen direction.
Opener "Got You Well" starts out quiet, but at the 49-second mark, the arrangement expands with spooky choral harmonies, percussive claps and heavy, ominous electric guitar. Although not all of the album is quite this ornately cinematic, there are plenty of sonic treats to be found: the mix of "Come and Gone" is dominated by its raw-sounding drum beat, while the gentle "Idling" swells with lush, romantic strings, and "Ain't No Bitter" has a hint of dark spaghetti western twang.
