The last time Red Hot Chili Peppers released an album, 2011's I'm with You, they had recently undergone some lineup turnover, with longtime guitarist John Frusciante being replaced by newbie Josh Klinghoffer. Now that the new lineup have had a chance to grow comfortable together, they have set their sights on a new album.
The band have been writing recently, and Flea told Rolling Stone that they have more than 30 new tunes. They're planning to begin recording within the next couple months, and they will whittle down this batch of new material to the length of album.
"It's super danceable, funky shit and some real introspective, pretty stuff," Flea said in regards to the new songs. "It feels good, man, and it's fun to play it."
Flea said that these writings sessions have been much smoother than the last ones, when the group were still undergoing a "feeling-out process" with Klinghoffer. "This time, it feels a lot better than the last one," Flea said.
Although there isn't a specific timeline for when the new LP will be done, the bassist offered, "I would hope that in a year from now, we have a record out and we're on a world tour."
It's no surprise that the Chili Peppers have been prolific in their writing sessions. Their I'm with You sessions produced an entire album of B-sides entitled I'm Beside You (which was culled from a series of 7-inches).
The band have toured extensively in the last few years, even appearing on the Super Bowl (without plugs in their instruments).
In related news, RHCP drummer Chad Smith just released a new album on the with Louisiana-bred pianist Jon Batiste and bassist/producer Bill Laswell called The Process. The record arrives today (October 21) digitally, with the physical release set for November 4, via M.O.D. Technologies and features guest appearances from TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Wu-Tang Clan's Killah Priest, among others. You can hear the album track "Drop Away" below.
