Evening Hymns to Deliver 'Spectral Dusk'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 26, 2012

Evening Hymns' first album, 2010's Spirit Guides, had leader Jonas Bonnetta delivering "abstracted personal tales that pulse with heart and soul," but the songwriter is getting pretty specific for the Toronto troupe's sophomore effort, Spectral Dusk.

A press release explains that Spectral Dusk, which hits retailers August 21 via Shuffling Feet Records, was influenced by the 2009 death of Bonnetta's father, and has shaped up to become "a study of loss, pain, and hope."

The bulk of the outing was recorded over a nine-day stretch in a log cabin near Perth, ON, by James Bunton (Diamond Rings, Ohbijou), and found close friends from the Wooden Sky, City and Colour, and Timber Timbre pitching in along the way.

"The idea was to create an environment to escape to, or be in," Bonnetta said in a statement of the remote setting in which Spectral Dusk was birthed. "To create 11 moments of reflection, or introversion."

The album apparently bounces from the anthemic chants of "Cabin in the Burn" to the "droning bliss" of "Irving Lake Access Road." You can get a taste of what's to come via a stream of slow-building first single "Arrows" down below.

Evening Hymns will celebrate the release of Spectral Dusk with a performance at Toronto's Theatre Centre on August 17 before heading out for a European tour with the Wooden Sky. More Canadian dates are expected in the fall.
