Divisive noise-rap provocateurs Death Grips have never followed any sort of rules, cancelling a slate of festival appearances that they probably never planned on attending and pissing off Epic Records enough to be dropped from the label. Now, however, they've completed their biggest stunt yet by disbanding.
The group, composed of rapper Stefan Burnett, drummer Zach Hill and producer Flatlander, have announced that they're effectively done as a band. They'll still drop the second half of their forthcoming The Powers That B double album, but that will be the last thing they do.
The group announced their disbandment with a handwritten note, which was originally posted to the band's Facebook, reads as follows:
We are now at our best and so Death Grips is over.
We have officially stopped.
All currently scheduled live dates are canceled.
Our upcoming double album The Powers That B will still be delivered worldwide later this year via Harvest/Thirdworld Records.
Death Grips was and always has been a conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision. Above and beyond a "band."
To our truest fans please stay legend.
Among the live dates that have been axed are those with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden this summer.
Death Grips dropped Niggas on the Moon, the first half of their double album, last month. The release, which supposedly features Björk on all tracks, can be streamed below.
UPDATE: In an amazing tweet, Trent Reznor offered the following:
