The 56th annual instalment of the Grammy Awards takes place today (January 26), and as always, the Recording Academy has handed out a heap of prizes celebrating the best music from the past year.
Many of the most interesting awards got handed out before the televised ceremony. During the pre-telecast festivities, Daft Punk won Best Dance/Electronica Album plus Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) for Random Access Memories, Vampire Weekend took home Best Alternative Music Album for Modern Vampires of the City, Gary Clark Jr. won Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Please Come Home," the Civil Wars won Best Country/Duo Performance with "From This Valley," and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell won Best Americana Album for Old Yellow Moon.
In the worlds of hip-hop and R&B, Justin Timberlake earned Best R&B Song for "Pusher Love Girl" plus Best Music Video for "Suit & Tie," Rihanna won Best Urban Contemporary Album for Unapolagetic, and Alicia Keys took home Best R&B Album with Girl on Fire. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also big winners, earning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song with "Thrift Shop," plus Best Rap Album with The Heist.
Meanwhile, Pharrell Williams won Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
On the old-school rock front, Black Sabbath took home Best Metal Performance for "God Is Dead?" while Led Zeppelin won Best Rock Album for Celebration Day, Paul McCartney's Wings Over America won Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package and his Live Kisses won Best Music Film, and Dave Grohl's star-studded Sound City: Real to Reel won Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Also in film music, Adele's "Skyfall" won Best Song Written for Visual Media. As for Canada, Michael Buble was a notable winner, taking Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album with To Be Loved.
