Over the years, Toronto guitarist Colin Cripps has played in bands like Crash Vegas, Junkhouse and Blue Rodeo, and last year released his first solo album. Now, he's issuing a debut album with yet another project: C & C Surf Factory, who will drop Garage City on April 14 through Six Shooter Records.
Cripps co-founded the surf rock project with fellow six-stringer "Champagne" James Robertson in 2012, and it has since expanded to include Sly Juhas (drums), Ryan Gavel (bass) and Chris Stringer (keys/percussion).
Robertson said in regards to the beach-ready surf sound, "Ultimately, the direction was a byproduct of our love for low-end twang and a common interest in wanting to play songs without words."
Although the band emphasize '60s surf influences, a press release promises that the album is "edgier and grittier than you might expect." You can certainly hear this in the fuzzy surf-noir of "Cobra Basket," which can be streamed below. "Takeshiesque," which is also below, is a little brighter, although there's a punk undercurrent to some of the chords.
The same day Garage City comes out on April 14, C & C Surf Factory will launch the album with a Toronto show at the Dakota Tavern.
