The vinyl market is booming, but there still aren't enough manufacturers to meet the demand. Sadly, the situation has now got even worse here in Canada, since our only pressing plant, RIP-V, just got bought out by an American company.
The Montreal factory announced this news in rather low-key fashion, by linking to an article in Le Devoir. Owner Phillipe Dubuc wrote simply, "It's been a great journey…" Its operations are being dismantled, and the machines will be moved to a facility in New Jersey.
This news doesn't come as a complete surprise, since rumours have recently been swirling that the company would be selling its equipment to a U.S. company. Exclaim! reached out to RIP-V for a comment last week, but we received no comment on the matter. Now, the bad news has been confirmed.
RIP-V was founded in 2007. Over the years, its clients have ranged from big labels like Epitaph, Merge and Universal to small independent artists. The company has pressed records by Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, She & Him and many more.
