Bosveld

"Back of Yr Mind"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 31, 2015

Electro-acoustic folk unit Bosveld take their name from an Afrikaans word describing a region of vast fields and rugged terrain — a concept that translates musically into expressive imagery and rich sonic landscapes. Their debut full-length is due out later this fall, but before Veldbrand arrives, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere "Back of Yr Mind" from the upcoming release.

The record — named for another Afrikaans term meaning "fields of fire" — is the brainchild of Théan Slabbert and prominently features Jeremy Mulders on saxophone, as well as friends and musical collaborators like Pascal Delaquis (Hilotrons), Philippe Charbonneau (Scattered Clouds, Hilotrons) and Jean- Francois Beauchamp (Kalle Mattson, Amos the Transparent). Together, they craft diverse, rhythmic soundscapes influenced by everything from Nick Drake to South African guitarist Derek Gripper to UK bass.

"Back of Yr Mind" is a winding journey through spiraling guitars, uplifting string arrangements and airy vocals. It's an open-minded psychedelic orchestral number that refuses to be confined to any one genre.

Veldbrand is officially out on October 18 through So Sorry Records, with a cassette release also coming courtesy of Moon Boy Records.
