Bob Dylan's 'Basement Tapes' to Be Released in Full

BY Josiah HughesPublished Aug 26, 2014

There's no time like the present to dig into Bob Dylan's archives. Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, for example, sees artists like Elvis Costello, Jim James and Marcus Mumford reinterpret some newly discovered Bob Dylan lyrics. In addition to the new, however, there's also the old, and Bob Dylan's full Basement Tapes sessions are now set to be released in full.

The Basement Tapes was initially released in 1975 and featured home recordings dating back to 1967 in which he performed with the Band. Of the 100-plus songs recorded, however, only 24 made it to the release.

The new edition of The Basement Tapes includes an astonishing 138 tracks spread across six discs. There are 30 songs that were unknown to have even existed prior to the announcement of this release.

The entire Basement Tapes were contained on 20 reel-to-reel tapes, which were housed with the Band's Garth Hudson at his home in Woodstock. Ten years ago, he sold them to Canadian collector Jan Haust, who recently cut a deal with Dylan's office to reissue the material.

"They had deteriorated some and a few reels were missing," a source from Dylan's camp told Rolling Stone. "We had to find copies of a few on cassette and DATs."

That said, this is the most comprehensive release of The Basement Tapes imaginable. "Everything is coming out, besides four or five things that just sound like distortion," the source added. "We usually curate these packages more, but we knew the fans would be disappointed if we didn't put out absolutely everything."

The complete edition of The Basement Tapes will arrive on November 4. You can read the full tracklisting on the next page.
