Since Amy Winehouse's death in 2011, the late soul singer has been honoured with posthumous releases and a documentary film. Soon, she will receive another tribute, this time a life-sized statue.
Artist Scott Eaton is designing the brass figure. It will be located at Stables market in Camden Town, the London borough where Winehouse lived. She died in a townhouse close to the location of the statue.
"I had a meeting with Camden council and they told me they don't usually allow statues until 20 years after someone has died, but in Amy's case they made an exception," Winehouse's father Mitch said [via the Guardian]. "It's a great honour to have the statue in the Stables. Amy was an integral part of Camden and still is, so you couldn't really think of putting a statue for her anywhere else, could you really?"
The statue will apparently feature Winehouse's signature beehive hairdo, plus information about how to donate to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, an organization that aims to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among young people. The singer's friends and family have been involved in the statue design.
It will be unveiled on September 14, on what would have been her 31st birthday. Winehouse's family hope that, by creating this public tribute to her, fans will visit the statue to pay their respects rather than the house where she died.
