Sad news has hit the Twin Peaks universe, as Catherine E. Coulson, the actress best known for playing the Log Lady, has passed away following a battle with cancer. She was 71 years old.
The news was confirmed by various people associated with Coulson, including Twin Peaks visionary David Lynch, who said [via Variety], "Today I lost one of my dearest friends, Catherine Coulson. Catherine was solid gold. She was always there for her friends — she was filled with love for all people — for her family — for her work. She was a tireless worker. She had a great sense of humor — she loved to laugh and make people laugh. She was a spiritual person — a longtime TM meditator. She was the Log Lady."
She played Margaret Lanterman, a.k.a. the Log Lady, in both seasons of Twin Peaks (1990 and 1991) in addition to the film Fire Walk with Me (1992). She had been slated to reprise the role in the new season of Twin Peaks, set to air in 2017.
Also in her career, Coulson worked with Lynch as an assistant director on his 1977 debut Eraserhead and played the titular role in Lynch's 1974 short film The Amputee. She worked as a camera assistant on numerous projects and most recently appeared on-screen in Portlandia (2012) and the film Redwood Highway (2013). She was an established theatre actor.
Hailing from Ashland, OR, Coulson was married twice: first to Twin Peaks/Eraserhead co-star Jack Nance, and then to Marc Sirinsky. She had a daughter with her second husband.
