The Grand Theft Auto franchise is easily one of the most successful videogame series of all time, having moved over 150 million units. It's also a series that has been riddled with controversies, some of which will be explored in a new film.
As Deadline reports, a new film based on David Kushner's 2012 book Jacked: The Outlaw story of Grand Theft Auto is in the works. The story follows anti-GTA activist Jack Thompson, who first took the game's manufacturers to court in 2003.
Now dis-barred, the former Florida lawyer crusaded against GTA and Rockstar Games throughout the 2000s. He also actively fought against other pop culture figures like 2 Live Crew and Howard Stern.
Bill Paxton has been cast in the role of of Thompson. Speaking with Deadline, the actor said, "He got Howard Stern kicked off the radio and took on 2 Live Crew… There'd be a gag order and he'd still go on talk shows. He would write these hateful letters to people he was litigating. He just got too emotionally caught up in it."
In addition to Paxton, the film will star Daniel Radcliffe as Sam Houser, Rockstar Games' co-founder. The film will be directed by Owen Harris (Misfits) for BBC Films.
