Zen Mystery Fogg

'Because of You' (7-inch stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Apr 10, 2015

The last time Zen Mystery Fogg released a record through Kingfisher Bluez (2012's "Raccoon" single), the Vancouver garage-pop band was a duo. They've since expanded into a five-piece, meaning that their new Because of You 7-inch showcases a larger sound.

The record mixes reverb-soaked production with sock-hock songwriting, as vintage-sounding pop ditties are filed through murky atmospherics. "Fate" features doo-wop-style harmonies, while "Stay Today" resembles the soundtrack to a Middle American school dance from the '50s, and there's a hint of a surf-rock twang to the licks of closer "Semi-Tones, Half Truths."

The record is officially out on April 18. The vinyl can be purchased on Bandcamp and streamed below. Zen Mystery Fogg will also be playing Vancouver's Railway Club tonight (April 10), and they will also have the release on hand at the merch table.
