Youth Trend Report

'Discreet Encounters' (EP stream)

Not far removed from last year's full-length Life Coach, Library Voices offshoot Youth Trend Report are gearing up to release a trilogy of EPs this coming year. To kick things off, Exclaim! has your first look at the series debut, Discreet Encounters, which you can now stream in its entirety.

Picking up where Life Coach left off, Michael Dawson (Library Voices) and producer Rob Morrison (Rah Rah) are more concerned with mood than melody in creating the EP's slow-burning soundscapes, making use of warm electronic textures and field recordings collected from Reykjavik, London, New York and Vancouver, not to mention some misappropriated drum loops.

"Over the years we've collected enough analog drum machines to fill a closet and enough pristine drum samples to fill a hard drive but neither of those options seemed very appealing to this project," Dawson explained in a statement. "Classic hip-hop and break beats were such a huge part of our youth but they've since been entirely abandoned the world over so we set out to process them and repurpose them into something new that would meet our needs."

Discreet Encounters will arrive on March 4 through Prairie Shag Recordings. For now, you can hear the entire EP in the player below.
