Yo La Tengo Re-imagined as Vinyl Figures for New Animated DVD Release

BY Matthew RitchiePublished Oct 4, 2013

Long-running indie rock icons Yo La Tengo are known for their pretty massive back catalog. But it appears the band's label, Matador Records, is amping up the merchandising for the group as well, as the imprint has just announced a follow-up to this summer's limited-edition shower curtain: a trio of soft-vinyl dolls in honour of the band.

Created by Japanese sculptor Tomohiro Yasui, the figures will be packaged alongside an accompanying DVD, which, according the label's blog, "contains an original animation (5:20 minutes) of a mind-blowing colorful dream world" that was designed by psychedelic animator Jim Woodrings. Simply referred to as "The Tree," buyers can look forward to new material from the group in the animated short.

At $40 U.S. a pop, this isn't the kind of item for your average collector. But if you're a diehard fan of the New Jersey-based three-piece, you can pre-order the package here or grab a copy on the road at one of the band's stops on their upcoming European tour. The DVD/toy set arrives November 19.

As previously reported, Yo La Tengo are also reissuing a deluxe version of their 2013 album Fade, which Matador puts into stores on November 19 as well. On November 5, the band are issuing "Super Kiwi" as a 7-inch record as well, with a cover of the Beach Boys' "A Day in the Life of a Tree" on the flipside.

You can steam/download "Super Kiwi" here and watch a trailer for the DVD below.
