Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly Pen Compositions for yMusic's New Son Lux-produced LP

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Aug 1, 2014

After recently popping up on the Beck-saluting Song Reader compilation, contemporary orchestral combo yMusic have now announced a full release of their own. The outfit's sophomore full-length Balance Problems includes pieces composed by indie pop artist Sufjan Stevens and avant-garde composer Nico Muhly, and it hits stores September 30 through the New Amsterdam imprint.

A press release notes that the classically trained sextet of Rob Moose, CJ Camerieri, Clarice Jensen, Alex Sopp, Hideaki Aomori and Nadia Sirota tracked the new LP with producer Son Lux, who had also worked with the group on their 2011 debut Beautiful Mechanical. With the experimental electronic producer, they apparently "pushed the limits" of their flute, clarinet, trumpet and strings arrangements, resulting in "a sonic tapestry of enormous depth and subtlety."

The eight-song album finds yMusic approaching compositions prepped by the likes of Muhly, Stevens, Timo Andres, Marcos Balter, Mark Dancigers, Andrew Norman and Jeremy Turner. You can see a sample of what to expect in an album trailer, which finds yMusic practicing pizzicato bowing techniques and ambient horn sounds from within a brick apartment, down below.

Beneath the album info, you'll find concert listings for upcoming performances teaming yMusic with Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry and Blake Mills.
