WTF? Matthew Dear Gets His Hard Drive Stolen While DJing

Bands getting robbed is nothing new. In fact, it happens with frightening regularity. But for an artist to get robbed mid-set, and in such a way that immediately terminates that set, is something to be filed under WTF. Just ask Matthew Dear. The micro-house extraordinaire was recently jacked in the middle of a DJ set, effectively stopping the music, the show and any good times.

On April 4, Dear was playing a show at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, NY, when he suddenly got a message on his computer saying that the hard drive was unplugged. According to organisers, the music suddenly ceased, and when Dear checked out the problem, he discovered the drive was missing — or to me more specifically, it was stolen. Galapagos management apparently asked people if they had seen anything, but came up with zero clues and zero leads.

The venue is still on the lookout for the culprit and asking anyone with information about the theft to contact them. However, since it’s unlikely many Canucks were ripping it up in Brooklyn last week, Dear’s mishap serves a more important purpose — reminding you to always, always back your shit up.

Matthew Dear opens for Hot Chip tonight at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in NY.
