The Wicked

...For Theirs Is the Flesh

BY Greg PrattPublished Apr 1, 2003

Like the first Mr. Bungle album, the Wicked's debut CD is a confusing mess that sounds great in theory. Time will tell if the Wicked turn into the genius that Bungle became with their second release, but for now this cacophony of circus music, long samples, melodic death metal, black metal and annoying electronica is just alienating for all but the most avant-garde listener. It's great to see bands trying something different and these three wackos certainly are going out on a limb here (and are having a fun time doing it too, which helps), but after about two minutes in, this one just begs to be turned off. The future could be interesting for the Wicked, or it could just hold more releases filled with admirable but totally unenjoyable music.
