After a prolific 2021 that yielded a pair of full-length LPs, Whitehorse have saddled up for their eighth studio effort. The Canadian duo will deliver new album I'm Not Crying, You're Crying on January 13 via Six Shooter.
Following last year's Modern Love and Strike Me Down, I'm Not Crying, You're Crying is said to find Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet leaning into country sounds of the 1970s for 12 songs about "heartbreak and loyalty, getting by and going crazy, and shaking things up and hunkering down."
Whitehorse have shared two new album tracks in "Division 5" and "Leave Me as You Found Me" alongside today's news, and you can hear them both in the players below.
Of the gentle, guitar-led "Division 5" — which tells the story of a man trying to find lost love with the help of the RCMP — Doucet offers, "It was just a funny turn at the idea that someone would file a missing person's report on yourself because you're such a lost bag of sh*t, and, you know, trying to invoke the strong arm of the law to help get your girl back. I love the idea that you're getting laughed at, by this squadron of police officers, until one of them pulls you aside, pulls out a guitar, and sings you a country song."
The pedal-steel strung "Leave Me as You Found Me," meanwhile, was sparked by the "campsite rule" of author and sex advice columnist Dan Savage: if you date someone who's much younger than you, leave them better than you found them. McClelland sings, "Don't leave your rubbish, your baggage behind / Don't leave these thoughts in the back of my mind / Dust off my heart, won't you please just be kind / And let me let you go."
This month, Whitehorse will perform at Ottawa's CityFolk festival. I'm Not Crying, You're Crying is now available for pre-order.
