White Rainbow

New Clouds

BY Daniel SylvesterPublished Oct 16, 2009

Founding member of space rock revivalists Yume Bitsu and Surface of Eceon, Adam Forkner's third proper LP as White Rainbow demonstrates the spirit of Kranky Records' newest line-up of forward thinking, cohabiting artists. Lending his hand to acts like Jackie-O Motherfucker, Atlas Sound, YACHT, the Microphones and Dirty Projectors, Forkner uses his refined experiences to lay out four more dense and extensive compositions over double LP New Clouds. Album opener "Tuesday Rollers and Strollers" pulls sounds from avenues of asphalt guitars, colliding drum patterns and layers upon layers of rhythmic, pulsating noise. Twenty-minute closer "Monday Boogies Forward Forever" sounds the most free-jazz-ish of the four, pulling the tubes out from the growlingly stale tribal rhythms perfected by Animal Collective and copied by so many. New Clouds represents a change of pace for Adam Forkner, showing his ability to reach back past 2003 for inspiration.
