White Poppy's Crystal Dorval Ropes In Prophecy Sun, Waters for Experimental Christmas Comp

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Dec 12, 2012

'Tis the season to start listening to your favourite Christmas carols, but Vancouver experimental pop musician Crystal Dorval (White Poppy, My Friend Wallis) will uncover some unorthodox holiday ookiness through her upcoming Whiteout compilation.

Dorval revealed to Exclaim! that Whiteout, which drops as an online freebie on Saturday (December 15), is "a collection of experimental, psych and weirdo covers of winter holiday songs," and was put together by reaching out to friends locally and abroad. Some of the Vancouver artists contributing to the set include ambient solo soundsmith Prophecy Sun, who takes on "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," and delay-pedal-loving duo Waters, offering up a new version of "We Three Kings."

Other acts involved include Los Angeles' Virgin Blood, Philadelphia's Brendan Codey and more. You can see an alphabetically arranged list of who's schedule to appear down below.

"I wanted to put it together because I liked the idea of taking these super cheery traditional songs and really messing them up," Dorval explains. "I also wanted to give something out for free during the consumer craze of Christmas."

While the comp won't hit until the weekend, you can sample the fuzz-bass and ice cavern echoes featured on White Poppy's wild and wobbly take on Wham!'s "Last Christmas" now in the player beneath the tracklist.
