Weezer Pen World Cup Anthem, Plot Canadian Festival Appearances

Even if the rumours of Weezer leaving Geffen for an indie label are false, the fact that they've just recorded a song called "Represent" in support of the U.S. men's World Cup soccer team - complete with cheesy synths and lines like "It matters what your people think, you represent your family" - proves you can take the band out of a major label, but you can't take the major label out of the band.

As a number of sources report, the song, which you can here in the video below, was penned by front-man Rivers Cuomo, who since childhood, has been a fervent soccer fan. The song is pure new-school Weezer, all fist-pumping and irony-less, but it gets his message across plain and simple: "It matters whether you win or lose."

Of course, Weezer isn't the only musical act to catch World Cup fever. Have you heard that K'naan song?

In related news, Weezer are set to play a number of Canadian festivals this summer. Check the band's MySpace here for dates that include Ottawa, St. John's, Halifax,  Montreal and Edmonton, among others.
