'Taxi Driver' Soundtrack Getting Treated to 40th Anniversary Vinyl Release

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Apr 4, 2016

In what appears to be the great Bernard Herrmann revival of 2016, it's been revealed that another part of the late film composer's impressive back catalogue is being re-released this year. Get ready to shave your heads and go flat-out bonkers, film score fanatics, as Waxwork Records will deliver a new pressing of the Taxi Driver soundtrack sometime soon.

Details are still developing, but the label confirmed today (April 4) in an Instagram post that it will be releasing a double-LP edition of Herrmann's jazz- and funk-exploring score to Martin Scorsese's 1976 classic as part of the film's 40th anniversary celebrations.

It's noted that the release features remastered recordings, and that this will be the first time Herrmann's score will be preserved in full. In other words, purists out there may want to consider flushing their truncated original copies "down the fuckin' toilet."

The release will also feature exclusive liner notes from film director Scorsese. The video also suggests one colour variant comes on black, white and yellow vinyl, a nod to the colour scheme of lead character Travis Bickle's NYC cab.

As per the fictional vigilante's inner monologue, it's been suggested that "someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets." Whether of not that happens before Waxwork delivers its Taxi Driver soundtrack is as yet unclear as the release date is TBA. You can, however, check out Herrmann's paranoia-instilling theme song for the film down below.

Earlier this year, Stylotone Records pressed a 7-inch single featuring Herrmann's whistle-heavy theme to 1968 psycho-drama Twisted Nerve. A full soundtrack release arrives on May 6.

UPDATE (4/7 1:00 p.m.): Waxwork has now confirmed that their Taxi Driver release goes on sale April 12. That'd be the new artwork up above. Below, you'll find a quick clip of Herrmann's score in a video that explores the bloody illustration found on the inner gatefold.

UPDATE (4/12 2:30 p.m.): The soundtrack is now on sale, and Waxwork are promoting it with a streaming player, which you'll also find below.
