Legendary singer/actress and Serge Gainsbourg partner Jane Birkin will be the subject of the new documentary Jane by Charlotte — a film made by her very own daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg. Ahead of the doc's premiere at Cannes, we have now have our first trailer for the film.

Jane by Charlotte is due to premiere tomorrow (July 8) at the film festival, but courtesy of Screen, we now have a much better idea what we can expect via the film's first trailer.

"We're both very reserved in one another's presence and I have no idea where it comes from," says Charlotte Gainsbourg in the trailer for her directorial debut.

As Gainsbourg explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the film came as a way for her to bond with her mother.

"I needed to get close to her, and I couldn't without an excuse. So the excuse was to get a team together and ask her if I could film her," she said. "The idea was to be able to look at her really with the eye of a daughter."

However, things didn't exactly go smoothly during filming, according to Gainsbourg. In fact, Birkin at one point attempted to shut down the production.

"She said, 'I hated what you did in Japan. I hated the interview.' I just said to the producer, 'Well, the film is finished. We can't continue,'" Gainsbourg said.

Eventually, though, Gainsbourg explained that her mother "did understand that it was done in a caring way, that it is a declaration of love for my mother."

While Jane by Charlotte has yet to get any sort of wide distribution deal, you can watch the trailer below.
