Watch Lorde Ruminate on the Sanctity of Pop Music While Scarfing Down Hot Wings

The pop star has finally had her turn on 'Hot Ones'

After dropping truth bombs about her notoriously lengthy recording process with Vogue and getting day drunk with Seth Meyers, Lorde has continued her Solar Power press circuit on the internet's spiciest show, First We Feast's Hot Ones, where she sampled a selection of hot wings and spoke about why pop music is so important to her.

"I feel like I'm inside the internet," the pop star began in her interview with host Sean Evans. "It is a weird sensation to be here. It's a little surreal, but I'm ready."

During the spicy wing challenge, the singer shared her feelings on the sacredness of pop music. "Ever since I was a kid even before I made anything, I had a sneaking suspicion it was more difficult to speak to a lot of people than it was to speak to a small amount. There's something really special about that," she explained.

"I love writing a pop melody, there's nothing better," Lorde continued. "For it to be simple but secretly complex and to kind of trick the brain. You can't fake it, it's a real experience. That's kind of what it is for me, that feeling of being able to talk to a lot of people, and to make something that's kind of highbrow but can be enjoyed in really simple ways."

As a self-proclaimed "lyric nut," Lorde also explained how her relationship with her own lyrics has changed. "As I get older, I find myself saying, 'No actually I'm not gonna explain that song.'"

She added: "Not because I necessarily need it left to interpretation, but because it's about something that's very precious to me."

When asked about her criteria for the perfect onion ring — in lieu of reviving the Instagram account where she reviews onion rings — Lorde answered: "I want an onion that has been cut thickly. I want a pretty crisp yet thick crust — I want it to have some substance. I guess I'd probably more be into a battered [onion ring] than a crumbed."

Solar Power is due to be released on August 20. As previously reported, the artist is scheduled to support the album on her 2022 world tour, which will make a few stops in Canada. You can see the full schedule here.
