September 14 would have marked Amy Winehouse's 33rd birthday, and Adele took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late UK soul singer at a show in Boston earlier this week.
After sharing an Instagram homage that simply read "Happy Birthday Amy X," Adele elaborated on the influence that Winehouse had on her own career.
"I feel like I owe so much of my career to her," she told the crowd. "I know America really caught on two her second album Back to Black, but her first album, Frank, really changed my life. I went to music school when I was 15 and when I was about 15 and a half, Frank came out. I used to see her on TV or in magazine shoots with a pink electric guitar, and I used to think she was the coolest motherfucker on the face of the Earth."
"And because of her, I picked up a guitar and because of her, I wrote my own songs," she continued. "The songs I got signed on were the songs that I wrote completely on my own. If it wasn't for her, that wouldn't have happened. I owe 90% of my career to her. I'm in love with her, and I'm obviously completely happy with all the music that she left behind because it's all genius. But every day, I wish I could hear a new song from her."
She then dedicated her rendition of Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love" from 19 to Winehouse. Watch the touching speech and musical performance below.
Winehouse passed away on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27.
