The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street

BY Cam LindsayPublished Sep 1, 2004

New York City isn’t known for a booming country rock scene, so it makes sense that the trio Vietnam originally formed in Texas. However, it isn’t entirely fair to label them as a full-on country band, for their debut, The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street, isn’t a simple load of twang. Built around long-winded, droning jams, Vietnam’s plan of attack is equal parts blues, country, psychedelic and scuzz rock. Singer Michael Gerner couldn’t sound any less enthused, reaching occasional levels of unconscious babble that reveal a true debt to Bob Dylan, an obvious hero. The EP’s five songs are all quite drawn out, save the opener, and yet, this is hardly dull amusement. Vietnam provide a much needed kick for self-indulgent hipsters looking to get their Southern rocks off.
