Videogame Composer Yasunori Mitsuda Honoured with Tribute Album Featuring Ryan Hemsworth, Friendzone

Gamers are likely familiar with the work of Yasunori Mitsuda, who has written music for RPGs like XenogearsShadow HeartsChrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Next week, the Japanese composer's work will be celebrated with the release of a hip-hop tribute called MITSUDA through Lefse Records on April 2.

The album was spearheaded by producer Julian Wass, who conceived the project after sampling Mitsuda's Xenogears score when producing the Main Attrakionz/Danny Brown team-up "Cloud Skatin." He then approached some friends about contributing beats with elements drawn from Mitsuda's work.

Contributors include Ryan Hemsworth, Friendzone, KeyboardKid206, .L.W.H., ZachG, Paladins and more. Hemsworth's beat-heavy "Proto" is available to download for free right here, while KeyBoardKid206's glitchy "Secret Forest...(Tree Music)" is here.

A press release notes, "While it's more than possible to enjoy the album at face-value, active listening is highly encouraged; to add to the fun, and in a reverent nod to video game tropes such as side-quests and collectable items, Wass has very special prizes for the careful listeners who can successfully identify the most samples from MITSUDA."
