Various Smoove Presents: Mo' Record Kicks Act 2 – B-Sides, Rmxs & Exclusive Cuts

Although Record Kicks doesn't have the roster of Do Right Music or the renowned backing of Acid Jazz or Brownswood, the Milan-based soul and funk label has done much to cast an identity for itself through a clever retro-styled campaign that presents its records as relics from the '60s. A follow-up to last year's Mo' Record Kicks, Act 2 provides listeners with even more exclusive, remixed and unreleased tracks. Unfortunately, Record Kicks doesn't have the fan base to warrant such exclusive collections. Big-fish-in-small-pond artists like the New Mastersounds and Dojo Cuts provide second-rate material, evidenced by Ray Lugo's remix of the Liberators' "Rags to Riches" completely misrepresenting their sound to newcomers. Mo' Record Kicks Act 2 does contain some standouts: Trio Valore's fuel-burning, Hammond-churning rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" and Mr. Comicstore's Italo-influenced remix of "Are You Ready." But this only means something to those already familiar with the lroster. How do you say, "counting your chickens…" in Italian? (Record Kicks)
