While the late Larry Brown may not yet be widely recognised as a prominent late 20th century American novelist, his work has had a strong effect on many singer/songwriters, as evidenced by this weighty 18-track tribute. While many of the songs, the vast majority of which have been previously unreleased, are inspired by Browns writing, his no-nonsense attitude was already clearly shared by most of the participants, from Alejandro Escovedo to Robert Earl Keene and Vic Chesnutt. But for potential listeners that havent read Brown, Just One More is most effective in simply encapsulating the deceptively simple vision of the rural American South he captured so well. Even the Mississippi Delta blues that often soundtracked his stories is represented by T-Model Ford and the North Mississippi All-Stars. On the other hand, Just One More can be enjoyed as simply a great collection of songs, whether someone is familiar with Brown or not. With the line between literature and music starting to blur more and more, other crossovers like Just One More will most likely be a welcome boost in rejuvenating the sagging publishing industry.
