Vancouver's Shame Spiral Return with Cryptic, Noisy 'Dictaphone Future'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 22, 2021

One of the oddities in prolific Vancouver songwriter Chris Van Der Laan's wide array of projects, Shame Spiral released a few peculiar EPs back in 2016-2017. Now, the band are back with a new collection, Dictaphone Future.

As the title indicates, Dictaphone Future was recorded entirely using a dictaphone. This gives the relatively conventional post-punk instrumental — ominous drums, thrumming bass, harsh guitar — an abstract, swampy quality. The vocals are credited to "a few incredibly mysterious people."

All of the song titles on Bandcamp are written in Russian, although they appear on English on Spotify, and include "Amoral," "Manifest" and "Ha-Ha-Ha."
