Come next month, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead will release their first album in three years, finally giving a taste of what the band are fully capable of when their not being suppressed by "the corporate ogre".
The album The Century of Self is due out February 17 and will be the first release on the group's own Justice Records imprint Richter Scale, which Trail of Dead started after a very public and very messy fallout with their former major label home, Interscope.
According to front-man Conrad Keely, we can expect "a more anthemic record" this time out, as well as one that ditches the big production values of the band's more recent releases and gets back to basics.
"On the last two albums, [2006's So Divided and 2005's Worlds Apart] we were really meticulous recording to click-tracks and doing overdubs," Keely told Billboard in an interview. "This time, we threw all that out. We learned the songs and all tracked live."
Keely also said to expect a much different sound than usual thanks to a move from Austin to New York, where he was inspired by bands such as the Dirty Projectors and Yeasayer (who make an appearance on The Century of Self).
"Suddenly I was almost overloaded with all this new music, and wondering how we could come close to matching it?" he said. "That inspiration came into a lot of the writing."
On the live front, Trail of Dead will be playing a few North American shows in support of the new album, including one show in Toronto, as well as some recently announced UK dates. In the meantime, here is the tracklisting for The Century of Self, followed by the tour dates:
