After closing in 2020 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Toronto's Mod Club relaunched as the Axis Club in 2021. The legendary venue in the city's Little Italy neighbourhood has now announced that it will be rebranding back to its original namesake.
To celebrate the return to the 722 College Street institution's roots, Daniel Caesar will perform an intimate acoustic set on June 14, presented by Billboard Canada and NXNE. "I'm really glad to be coming back to the Mod Club to play after all these years," the R&B star said in a press release, having made his live debut there in 2016. "That place will always have a special place in my heart."
The venue's longstanding owner, Manuel DaCosta added, "We are excited to be a part of the Mod Club's return to Toronto and solidifying its long-term future as a key part of Toronto's music scene. We look forward to welcoming fans as we usher in an exciting new era for the venue."
The Mod Club was founded by Platinum Blonde frontman Mark Holmes and partner Bobbi Guy, beginning as a series of '60s UK-inspired rock and funk parties. They found a permanent home at the theatre — built in 1922 — in 2002, and went on to host acts like the Weeknd, Amy Winehouse, Muse, John Mayer, Katy Perry and more. In 2023, DaCosta joined forces with Live Nation to add the venue to the entertainment corporation's extensive list of partnered performance spaces.
