Topanga Change Name to PUP Ahead of Debut Album

Toronto power-pop act Topanga recently emerged with a 7-inch for Hollerado's Royal Mountain Records label, and we noted in a live review last year, "There's a lot of excitement around Topanga right now." Now that they've made a name for themselves, the up-and-coming act are going to have to start all over again, since they've just changed their moniker to PUP.

In an announcement on their new Facebook page, the band noted that they were originally named after Topanga Matthews from the '90s sitcom Boy Meets World. Now, however, the TV show is being rebooted by Disney (as Girl Meets World), prompting the name change.

The band wrote, "Topanga is now just a washed-up character in some kind of Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montana horseshit. We really don't want to associate ourselves with Disney — I'm sure you can all understand that. Ultimately, the corporate gutting of our teenage love AND her name, Topanga, won't stop us. We really believe in our band, and we love playing music together. So, we've moved past the frustration, and have chosen a name we all truly love and believe in. Fuck Disney, and fuck Topanga. WE ARE PUP. Let's do this."

PUP — who have a very similar name to Vancouver's PUPS, right down to the capitalization — will soon release their debut album. It was produced by Dave Schiffman (Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and the band enthused, "It will be coming out soon, and we are INSANELY proud of it."

A catchy power-pop tune from the band's sessions with Schiffman called "Lionheart" is streaming at the bottom of this page.

PUP will make their live debut under their new name next month. See their schedule below.
