Tokyo Police Club Put Nostalgia on Your List with the "Definitive" Studio Version of "Top 5"

The new take on an old fan favourite comes ahead of this week's 'Champ' anniversary shows

Tokyo Police Club's 10-year anniversary celebration for their third album Champ — released June 8, 2010 — might be slightly delayed due to the pandemic, but the Newmarket-formed outfit are still going all out: first a vinyl reissue, then a string of anniversary shows in Toronto and now they've shared a new studio version of unreleased track "Top 5" from back in the day.

In a tweet, the band said called the recording the "definitive studio version of a tune that's been floating around since the early days." Fans have long sought an official recording of the favourite from live shows, and TPC has finally delivered — since they always give the people what they want.

As the story goes, a Readers' Poll suggested the top five reasons for everything — so here we are. "Top 5" and the lists of its namesake feel both nostalgic and evergreen, managing to harken to the MySpace era while being right at home on Buzzfeed. And the song's warm tones arrive just in time for the beginning of year-end list season!

Earlier this year, Exclaim! caught up with keyboardist Graham Wright about how Champ was the band's "big swing."

Listen to "Top 5" in its full studio glory below. Does it crack your top five TPC tracks?

After this week's gigs at Lee's Palace, the band will take their commemorative anniversary performances on the road with a US tour.
